Golden’s two decades of greatest growth were 1870-1880 (after the arrival of the railroad) and 1940-1950 (as World War II veterans used the GI Bill to attend the Colorado School of Mines). Both decades resulted in a wave of home and apartment-building.

The January 29, 1953 Colorado Transcript announced that work was starting on a new 21-unit apartment house in the 2200 block for Ford Street. It was to be constructed of fireproof brick and would cost $100,000 to build. The owner was William H. Scofield, a Denver attorney.

By October of that year, the building was completed and apartments were ready to rent. Their great location–close to the School of Mines, Coors, and downtown Golden–has ensured that the apartments have never remained vacant for long.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
