News from the City: Condo Fire in Golden Forces Evacuation of Four Residences

Golden, Colo. – September 24, 2012 – Just before 4:30 p.m., Golden Dispatch received a call about a condo on fire at the Briarwood Commons condo complex on Elm Circle in Golden.  Golden Police and Fire arrived within minutes, and flames were billowing out of the second floor porch.

According to police, an 11-year old girl was in the residence cooking on the stove.  She got some paper towels too close to the burner and they caught on fire.  She told police she tried carrying the paper towels out of the house, but she left the stove on.  By the time she tried to go back in, there was a lot of smoke.  So she went to a neighbors’ house and called 9-1-1.  No one else was home at the time, but there were two cats and a dog.  The dog made it out safely but the cats did not survive.

The fire spread into the attics of the surrounding condos, all housed in the same structure.  The home where the fire started has severe fire and smoke damage.  The neighboring units have smoke damage and some fire damage in the attic.  Fire crews are currently still working to put out the fire.  Residents of all four units are not allowed back in their homes at this time.
