The downtown holiday lighting is so popular that people often wonder why we don’t keep them up all year round.  There are a number of good reasons, including the cost of the electricity and the wear and tear on the lights resulting from our occasional 100 mph wind storms.  There’s also the strain they can put on the trees when spring comes and they begin to bud.

So this year we’re striking a compromise.  The trees along the creek and in Parfet Park will go dark at the end of Stock Show (January 23rd).  The trees along Washington Avenue and 12th & 13th Streets (which are financed by the Golden Urban Renewal Authority) will keep their lights for an extra month, till about the 20th of February.  So this year we can look forward to a twinkling Valentine’s Day!
