Yesterday (Figuratively Speaking), Today, and Tomorrow

Last night, I was reading a Colorado Transcript from September 24, 1942–right in the heart of World War II. The lead article was about a fund-raiser being held at the Labor Temple (now the Buffalo Rose events center). “See U.S. Navy Pacific Battle With the Japs” promised a show including pictures of the battle, some speakers, and entertainment by the School of Mines and Golden High School bands. Admission was $1, for which attendees received four 25-cent Defense Stamps. Those stamps offered citizens a way to support the war effort with a very small investment. The stamps would be saved in a book and a completed stamp book could be turned in for a war bond.

I’ve always read that the whole country united behind the war effort, and the other articles in that issue certainly support that idea:

– Lt. D. Durham Is Killed in Plane Crash
– Golden Dad Follows Son and Joins Navy
– Persons Physically Handicapped Can go to Work on War Jobs
– Many Gifts Taken to Lowry Field Monday
– Second Front Scrap Campaign Opens In Colorado Sept. 28
– Service for Victory League is Organized in Jefferson County
– Conserve Your Tires Advises War Board – Get Off Those Precious Tires and Walk
– Drive for Lamps to Be Made by Legion Auxiliary in Golden
– Service for Victory League is Organized in Jefferson County
– The editor’s column encouraged people to be trained in first aid because 4 of the 12 county doctors had been drafted.
– A filler ad said “Not everybody with a dollar to spare can shoot a gun straight–but everybody can shoot straight to the bank and buy War Bonds. Buy your 10% every pay day.”

Most of the other articles reported on where Golden’s young men were stationed. Our citizens had strong personal reasons to be wholly focused on the War.
