The Golden Gallop

Have you done your 5K or 10K for the Golden Gallop yet? A friend and I are doing a 5K walk this afternoon. I’ve never done a race in my life, but walking at my own pace in a non-competitive environment sounds completely doable. Sign up, get a little exercise, and benefit the Golden Schools Foundation! Sunday is the last day to do it. Learn more and register….

Saturday Preview

There are so many things going on tomorrow that I thought I’d better provide some advanced warning. I’ll include the full list in the Saturday email (or you can check the calendar page now), but these are unusual events and you might want to plan for them:

8AM-3:30PM The City has a branch collection site set up, which will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8-3:30PM. Learn more….

9AM-1PM Several non-profits will have a “parking lot sale” tomorrow at the Visitors Center. The Christian Action Guild Food Bank will also be there doing a food drive. Their most wanted items are soup, crackers, pasta/rice meals, pasta sauce, peanut butter, cooking oil, condiments, personal items like shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste…they will also accept cash donations. Leadership Golden will be there, so this is your chance to get the 2020 ornament (those generally sell out close to Christmas).

10AM-5PM Golden Sidewalk Sale downtown
The downtown merchants are having a sidewalk sale tomorrow. Check out the interesting merchandise at Avenue Gifts, Baby Does Clothing & Accessories, Blue Moose Trading Co., Bumps & Bundles Consignment and Maternity, Creekside Jewelers, Earth Sweet Botanicals, El Dorado, Golden Goods, Golden Poultry & Meats, Golden Puzzle Room, Golden River Sports, Goozell Yogurt & Coffee, Marrygrams Boutique, Oh Susanna Vintage Photo Parlor, Rewind, Toad&Co., Truly Bohotique, and Vital Outdoors!

10AM-1PM Heart of Golden 2020 Walking Tour
City Staff will be stationed at various spots along the Clear Creek corridor to describe some of their ideas for remodeling the Clear Creek Corridor. Plan to walk from the Coors office building at 311 10th Street to Lions Park. Learn more….

6:30-10PM Movie Night at the Horse Protection League
Plan to watch Hidalgo (with Viggo Mortenson) at the historic Churches Ranch. Buy tickets here….

Golden History Moment

Sidewalk sales are a time-honored tradition in downtown Golden. The first reference I found was 1959–it was part of the festivities associated with Golden’s centennial celebration. Golden had sidewalk sales every year from 1959 through at least 1977–the last year for which Golden Transcripts are available online. Sometimes they were combined with flea markets or art sales.

Sidewalk sales have been more sporadic in recent years, but they’re always fun when they do happen.
