Golden History Moment

The December 20, 1976 Golden Transcript included this ad, announcing that Hesteds Department Store was going out of business.

Hesteds 5 and 10 store opened in 1957. It was part of a nationwide chain.

In 1962, the store enlarged significantly and renamed itself “Hesteds Department Store.”

The 1976 announcement was the third in a rapid succession of closures in Golden. Our King Soopers grocery store, which had been at 19th and Jackson (now US Bank) had closed a month earlier, and the Mark ‘N’ Bag grocery store (13th and Ford) had closed the previous week. City officials hastened to announce that the City was still in sound financial condition.

By late January, the remaining fixtures were sold in an auction, with display tables going for $8, glass display cases for $15, clothing racks for $6, and benches for $5.

Despite several inquiries and offers over time, the building stood empty for nearly 30 years. In 2005, the property was purchased for redevelopment as a mixed use building, with businesses on the first floor and residences above.
