Golden History Moment

Foothills Art Center was founded in 1968, and of course, they’ve always needed to raise funds. The very first year, three prominent artists–Hal Shelton, Ron Waelcli, and Tom Berger–contributed paintings. Foothills accepted one dollar contributions in exchange for a chance to win one of those paintings.

Golden Transcript, December 6, 1973

That first fund-raiser evolved into a holiday art auction. The auction art was on display during the first week of December and sealed bids were accepted.

By the mid-1970s, the Holiday Art Market that we know and love today had evolved, and it’s been running ever since:

Members of the Foothills Art Center in Golden and invited artist friends are planning to set up a Holiday Art Market beginning Sunday. Creative imaginations and ingenious skills combine to produce an abundance of one-of-a-kind hand-crafted gifts and decorations for an old-fashioned Christmas.
