City Council will meet tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers.  This will be a study session, which means that no votes will take place and no public comment is accepted.  They will be discussing three topics:  Small Scale Short Term Lodging Regulations, Safe Gun Storage Regulations, and plans to redesign North Washington Avenue.

With Golden’s growing popularity as a tourist attraction, more and more residents are thinking of renting out rooms in their homes. Renting rooms has been a common practice throughout Golden’s history, as we’ve always had School of Mines students in need of housing; however, apps such as AirBnB and VRBO are making the practice easier for short-term rentals. This has been a contentious issue in many cities, with some people liking the revenue potential while others object to their neighborhoods serving as hotels. Golden is trying to get ahead of this issue by figuring out now how we want to handle “vacation rentals” (as opposed to Accessory Dwelling Units). If you’ve ever thought of renting out part of your home, watch tonight’s meeting or at least read Steve Glueck’s memo in the meeting packet.

Council will also consider an ordinance requiring the firearms be stored in locked containers or be equipped with trigger locks. The Golden Police will be giving away trigger locks at the National Night Out celebration on August 1st in Parfet Park.

The North Washington redesign has expanded in scope in the wake of the public input meetings, so the Public Works Director will ask Council to consider potential inclusions and exclusions to reduce the budget for the project.  Learn more….
