GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The three bridges to be replaced, shown on the 1882 Birds’ Eye View Map of Golden, Colorado – enlarge

The November 18, 1909 Colorado Transcript reported that the Denver Reservoir and Irrigation company had “at last” agreed to put in a new bridge over the Church ditch at Washington avenue, “thus making safe a menace to the safety of North Side school children for many years.” They also planned to build new bridges where the ditch went under Cheyenne and Arapahoe streets.

All of them are to be constructed of cement. The one at Washington avenue is to be thirty-five feet wide, the others sixteen feet. All are to have substantial hand rails. In addition to the bridge at Arapahoe street it is the plan to construct a five-foot cement sidewalk over the ditch at that point.

These days, the ditch goes under the streets and people pass over it, unaware of its existence.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
