This Weekend

Here’s a heads-up about two big events happening this weekend:

8AM-2PM on Saturday Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum’s Garage Sale

10AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday Golden Fine Arts Festival

Golden History Moment

The August 19, 1943 Colorado Transcript described the “Million Dollar Military Parade” that took place on Washington Avenue the previous Saturday. The parade was part of the annual “Golden Days” celebration (which was the precursor to Buffalo Bill Days).

Since we were squarely in the middle of World War II at the time, the parade had a special military emphasis. It featured three companies of Army troops, which were stationed at the School of Mines at that time. The tanks and trucks came from Camp George West.

Those who observed the expressions on the faces of the berry-brown men who manned this mechanical fighting equipment knew that when the time comes these men are prepared to do their duty and in no uncertain manner.

The military display served as a reminder to BUY WAR BONDS, which were used to finance the War.
