So What Is “The Golden Cultural Alliance?”
The Golden Cultural Alliance was formed in 1998 so that Golden’s cultural groups could support each other with advice and marketing. February had always been a slow month in Golden, so the GCA offered to liven up the month with special exhibits, concerts, and lectures. We had fewer culturals back then (and far fewer events!). They were run mostly by volunteers, and none of them had significant marketing budgets. Early members of the Cultural Alliance were the Golden Pioneer Museum, Friends of the Astor House, Foothills Art Center, the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, and the Jefferson Symphony.

We had a new walking tour brochure that year, leading people through the 12th Street Historic District. The Cultural Alliance decided to promote both the walking tour and the special cultural events by naming February “Heart and Sole” (like a foot) “of Golden Month.” After a few years, the association with the walking tour was lost, so the month was renamed “Heart and Soul of Golden Month.” The footsteps in the artwork lasted several more years, until the jazzy new red heart was designed a few years ago.

Cookbooks
The Cultural Alliance published a hardcover cookbook one year (2003), which included volunteers’ favorite recipes and beautiful photographs of Golden. That book, alas, is long-since out of print.

Sweethearts
For many years, the Cultural Alliance would select a pair of super-volunteers from the community and name them “Golden’s Sweethearts” for the year. The Sweethearts would be invited to exhibit openings, opening nights for plays, symphony concerts, etc. The list of Sweethearts includes many of Golden’s heavy-hitters from the early 2000’s: Pete Smythe & Jacquie Craig, Helen & Hal Leith, Donna and Tom Plummer, Mary & Hal Shelton, Mary & Charlie Ramstetter, Carol & Chuck Baroch, Joy & Jack Brandt, Jean & Ed Dorsey, the entire Tiberi family, Bill and Charlene Pazar, Ted and Frani Bickart, Vern and Vickie Wagner, Carol Christensen, Kathy & Kevin O’Connor, and Heidi Markley. The Sweetheart program lasted through 2013. We still gather and publicize the Heart and Soul of Golden events though!
