Learn about the “fighter jets” of the bird world and meet real live falcons! Presented by Nature’s Educators. Tuesday from 2-3PM they’re offering Craft-a-Palooza and Wednesday they’re having an Intro to Tae-Kwon-Do.

Sock Update:

Here’s some new info on the Warm Socks for Cold Feet program that I wrote about on Saturday. In addition to the drop off boxes at the Golden Visitors Center (map) and City Hall (map), the Methodist Church (map) will also have a collection box. The church will be open on Nov 27 and 28 (Wednesday and Thursday) from about 10 am to 2 pm each day. Likewise, the Unitarian Church (map) is also accepting donations of new socks. As a reminder, the #1 clothing need among the homeless is warm socks; accordingly, Warm Socks for Cold Feet is soliciting donations of NEW, WARM SOCKS.

History Follow-Up:
Yesterday I showed a picture of the old Mitchell school in its downtown location. That building was completed in 1936, largely funded by a federal grant from the Works Progress Administration. It was demolished in 1998. Prior to the school building, the west end of that location held a large hotel. Constructed in the early 1880s, it was originally called the “Hotel St. Bernard,” and later renamed the “Bella Vista Hotel.” The building had stores, the post office, a bar, and a billiard room on the first floor, a grand ballroom on the second floor, and 75 guestrooms. Unfortunately, in that era Golden just couldn’t support a hotel of that size. It was never a commercial success and was demolished in 1920. The land then stood vacant until the new school was built in 1936.
