Golden History Moment

Tent “next to the Methodist Church,” west side of Washington between 13th and 14th – Denver Public Library Western History Collection – enlarge

For many years, it was common to see big tents set up in vacant lots in Golden. They were most commonly used by traveling evangelists, but were also used for cultural events.

Some examples from historic Transcripts:

1894 Uncle Tom’s Cabin was performed in a tent next to the Methodist Church–west side of Washington, halfway between 13th and 14th.

1897 – 7th Day Adventist gospel tent next to the Methodist Church.

1900 – Evangelist tent, next to the Methodist Church.

1904 – Gospel tent, 13th and Washington.

1905 – Evangelist tent on the north side of 12th Street, near Jackson.

1917 – YMCA tent in City Park (16th and Illinois)

1918 Chautauqua series in a tent in City Park

1919 – Chautauqua tent on the School of Mines campus

1920 – Evangelist tent somewhere on the north side of the Creek

The most dramatic tent event occurred on a Monday morning in 1897. A heavily loaded freight car filled with clay went out of control. It rolled west on 13th Street towards Washington Avenue. The railroad tracks stopped at Washington, but the loaded car didn’t: it barreled across the street into a large gospel tent.

The railroad (normally) terminated on the east side of 13th and Washington, while the gospel tent was set up across the street, on the west side – excerpt from image X-9927, Denver Public Library Western History Collection – enlarge

The wild car then passed over the sidewalk on the west side of the avenue, and dashed into the tent, mashing all the seats on one side to smithereens. The rear of the car was fully one hundred feet from the sidewalk, making nearly 200 feet that it passed over after leaving the track. Fortunately no one was in its course, but it is fearful to contemplate the result had the accident happened while service was being held in the tent.
