Golden History Moment

Marv Kay, #74 on the left – Golden History Museum collection – click to enlarge

The September 30, 1970 Golden Transcript featured the “Marv Kay Story.” At that time, Marv was beginning his second year as the head football coach for the School of Mines. He had been on the Mines athletic staff for five years and had previously served as the assistant football coach and the head varsity swimming coach. Marv had graduated as a mining engineer from the School of Mines in 1963. The article detailed his accomplishments as a student athlete.

The 6’1″ 250 pound student won two letters as a heavyweight wrestler and three letters as a varsity tackle. He was named to several All-Opponent teams in the Rocky Mountain Faculty Athletic Conference (now the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, RMAC), and received All-American football mention in 1960. Following his graduation in 1963 Kay was drafted by the Denver Broncos.

Marv came to the School of Mines as a freshman in 1957. That same year, his father died. Marv quit school to work, to help support his mother and four siblings. For several years, he alternated between school and work, eventually graduating six years later. While in school, he was elected as president of both his junior and senior classes, received citizenship awards from ROTC, and was named “Mr. Engineer” for student leadership.

The thing that struck me about this article was that already, in 1970, people were writing “The Marv Kay Story.” At that time, he was just getting started!

Marv served on Golden City Council for twelve years and was Mayor for eight. He has also served as board member, advisor, and president of the Golden Civic Foundation. He went on to become the school Athletic Director and a Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. He is in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. Now retired, he holds the position of Professor Emeritus.

In 2015, the School of Mines recognized his lifetime of service by naming their new 4,000 seat grandstand the Marv Kay Stadium.

At 9 o’clock this morning, the Golden Civic Foundation will dedicate a bench at the entrance of the Golden Community Center in Marv Kay’s honor. A dedication event, which is open to the public, will take place in the Community Center entrance and lobby to honor Kay’s more than 30 years of service to the Golden Civic Foundation as a Board Director and 65 plus years to the Golden community.

Next Saturday will be the first annual Marv Kay Come In & Play Free Day–free admission to the Golden Community Center, in honor of Marv Kay!

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
