GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

A few of Tom Young’s early contributions to the Transcript – enlarge

Long before his July 6, 1990 accident, Tom Young was a familiar presence to Transcript readers. He contributed many photos to the Transcript throughout high school. While he photographed football games and Civic Foundation events, his favorite subject was whatever the Golden Volunteer Fire Department was doing.

Milestones that appeared in the Transcript – Tom as a young photographer, Tom and Frank opening a tavern, and Tom and Linda marrying – enlarge

When he turned 21, he and his brother Frank took over his late father’s tavern in downtown Golden. When they sold the business in 1985, he became the manager of the Foss photo department. He married Linda Richards in 1982, and two children followed. All of these milestones were covered with photos and articles in the hometown paper.

In 1989, he was hired by the City as a building/fire inspector. In February of 1990, he was selected for a newly-created position: Fire Department Administrator. After that, he was quoted by the paper whenever a fire or rescue occurred. While working for the City, he continued his long-time service as a Volunteer Fireman.

It was in his capacity with the Fire Department that he performed the rescue that left him quadriplegic. As he later described the accident, “I tried to free the hang glider so the rappel team could come down, and it just let loose. I was tangled up in the (glider’s) wires for a minute and lost my balance.”

The Transcript did a good job of keeping the community informed about Tom’s status.

A message from Tom’s family remarked that he was, “…in a desperate struggle for his life as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty”

July 24, 1990
Tom Young knows he’s fought his last fire. He knows he won’t be able to play ball with his kids like he used to. He knows what’s ahead will entail “a big change of life.” Yet, despite all the crushing realizations, ‘‘l’m still pretty positive,” he said from his wheelchair in the intensive care unit at St. Anthony Hospital Thursday. The last two weeks have been “pretty scary” for the 29-year-old Golden Volunteer Fire Department captain and manager left quadriplegic when he fell while helping to rescue a hang-glider pilot on Lookout Mountain.

“Linda has been staying here day and night. That’s probably the biggest help for me to get me through this,” said Young. “The fire department has been great, amazing — the whole community,” said Linda. Tom and I are overwhelmed by the support.”

He does hope, as do city officials, that he eventually will be able to return to his job as fire department manager. Realizing he will not be a firefighter is ‘‘pretty hard.” “That was something I lived for and I always enjoyed,” said Young.

The City’s Personnel Manager said “the city is operating under the assumption that Tom Young will rehabilitate and come back to work as the Golden Volunteer Fire Department manager. And the city is anxious to have Tom back to work even if he does not completely recover from his current paralysis.”

August 16, 1990
Tom was off the respirator and left the hospital for several weeks at Craig Rehabilitation Center.

To be continued…
