Golden History Moment

Golden Transcript – July 16, 1979

The July 16, 1979 Transcript featured the Christian Action Guild Thrift Shop. The shop was started in 1964 by a group of women from the Episcopal Church. By 1979, volunteers from many other congregations had joined them, and the shop was a going concern. Donated merchandise was resold at delightfully low prices, and people in need were outfitted for free. The store carried both clothing and toys.

The thrift shop operated in many different locations–basically, wherever somebody had some space available. They started in the back room of D.J.’s restaurant on 12th Street, then moved to Calvary Church, then from there to the basement of a house (unspecified location), then into a house behind Foss Drug, followed by a stock room at Meyer Hardware. In 1975, they moved into the back room of a florist’s shop at 1113 Washington Avenue.

The store continued its migratory existence until the mid-1990s, when Barbara Foss (of Foss Drug Store fame) purchased property at 14th and Ford and built a permanent home for the organization. There, an energetic group of volunteers runs not only the thrift store but a large food pantry.

There’s a great shopping opportunity coming up this Thursday, July 21st, when the Christian Action Guild hosts SHOP FOR A CAUSE:

Sip – Shop – Support

Join us! Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 5 PM – 8 PM at CAG on 1401 Ford Street in Golden.

Thanks to generous donations, we have fabulous boutique store items available for purchase that night – and that night only! It’s sustainable shopping and we all know that reuse is more important than recycling. Grab your friends and enjoy an evening sipping wine, chatting and of course shopping! Wine, cheese & light bites will be available.

If you have boutique items that you want to donate to this event, please drop them off during our donation hour (Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 AM – 3 PM).

Ticket price is $20.

Your ticket is a donation and 100% of the donation goes to the Food Pantry’s Nutritional Food Program. That evening you can check out our food pantry to see what makes it so special and unlike all other Food Pantries in the area.
