GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

What a difference a decade makes! I spent some time yesterday looking at my posts from 2014. Here were some of the highlights:

Golden History Museum Collection

Gary Wink retired, after 19 years of running the Golden Chamber.

Pamela Gould and Laura Weinburg began serving on City Council. Marcia Claxton and Joe Behm began their second terms. Bob Vermeulen and Bill Fisher finished their terms.

The downtown merchants celebrated First Fridays at that time, so they stayed open late, served refreshments, and sponsored free carriage rides.

In association with the National Western Stock Show, the Jeffco Fairgrounds hosted a team penning competition.

The Colorado Cowboy Gathering celebrated their 25th Anniversary.

The State had recently legalized marijuana, so Golden’s City Council was discussing whether we should allow its sale in Golden.

Golden Beer Talks was in its first year. January’s speaker was Dr. Jim Dale.

The School of Mines had announced their plans to build a new football stadium (ultimately called Marv Kay Stadium). The Historic Preservation Board discussed it and the Planning Commission held a public hearing.

The City was negotiating a TIF agreement with Natural Grocers, which planned to replace the Golden Bowl.

The Golden History Museum hosted an exhibit called “Made in Golden,” about our historic industries. The Geology Museum had a special exhibit of fluorescent minerals. Foothills Art Center opened their Colorado Clay Exhibit. The Railroad Museum had “Ride the Rails” Saturdays. The Quilt Museum hosted a speaker who discussed how pioneer women adapted their “city clothes” to the rigors of homesteading life.

GURA was inviting the public to send images to be included in a large mosaic banner on the CoorsTek building. They used a Jesse Crock painting as the base.

Light rail had arrived in Golden the previous April. The pedestrian bridge over 6th Avenue to the light rail station was opened with a ribbon-cutting and ceremony.

Foothills Animal Shelter was anticipating the Super Bowl with an Adopt-A-Bowl. Dogs were half-off; cats were $5, and critters were free. They encouraged people to watch the game with their new best friend.

Miners Alley Playhouse opened Parallel Lives, starring Lisa DeCaro & Gail Montgomery.

The Golden Lions Club held their annual chili supper.

Heritage Square Music Hall had given their last performance on New Year’s Eve. In January, they held a liquidation sale, offering costumes, props, sets, and theater equipment.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
