6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall
City Council will decide tonight whether to put a lodging tax and expanded sales of marijuana on the ballot this fall. Those who favor these items see them as significant new sources of revenue. Those who question the lodging tax generally do so because the plan for how the money will be spent is so nebulous. Those who question marijuana sales tend to think it will just downgrade the city overall. Council has not made a specific commitment as to how many marijuana shops would be allowed, or where they would be. If you have an opinion on either of these items, you can express it at the meeting, during public comment, or send an email to councilcomments@cityofgolden.net.
Council will also discuss the parking situation near the Lubahn trailhead. The residential neighborhood at the base of the trail has been overrun with parked cars and trash left by visitors. The residents would like to have a parking permit system.
Golden History Moment
The August 10, 1982 Golden Transcript announced that a new restaurant was opening at 714 14th Street: Mrs. Delaney’s Carolina House. The new restaurant would feature southern cuisine. The owners were not named Delaney.
That building has been home to several families and many businesses there over the years. According to Cathleen Norman’s book, Golden Old and New, it was built in about 1910. For the first sixty years, it generally served as a family residence, but was a mortuary for a few years during the 1930s.
Several families lived there over the years, including the Jaegers, Pratts, Waldschmidts, Zieglers, Heilands, and Bengsons.
Mildred Delaney, a widow, and her son Gerald moved there in 1948. She was a school teacher and also taught music, giving lessons and hosting recitals in the home. She died in 1969, and after Gerald’s marriage in 1970, the family sold the house.
The building has hosted businesses since that time, beginning with Golden Floral (1971-1978). Albert Fike–an entertainer–opened The Brass Lantern restaurant in 1978. This was followed by Radclyffe Hall in 1980 and Carolina House in 1982.
The owners of Carolina House billed the restaurant as “haunted,” insisting that the ghost of Mrs. Delaney still occupied the house and was responsible for the failure of the two previous restaurants.
There is a gap in my knowledge after this, but by the 1990s it was Italian restaurant Tony Rigatoni’s. The current occupant, Thai Gold, has been going strong since its opening in late 2011.
