5-6PM Lodging Tax and Retail Marijuana Information Open House
City Council is considering placing two ballot measures on the November 2021 election. One is regarding the authorization of a tax on overnight commercial lodging visitors to our community in hotels, motels, campgrounds, and short-term rentals. The second item City Council is considering is a measure that would adopt new regulations permitting retail sales of marijuana to adults within the parameters of Amendment 64 and to impose an excise tax on the commercial sales.

Join us for an Open House to learn more about these issues and provide input on what you support, including parameters or funding scenarios. Learn more about either the lodging tax or retail marijuana at www.GuidingGolden.com.

6-7PM Community Meeting: Presentation on Houselessness
Come hear about issues involving our Houseless community from city leadership. The first meeting was on June 28 with a focus on the City listening to your feedback on the topic.

This second meeting will be August 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers and online. The meeting’s focus is for the City to respond and talk about what some of the causes are of homelessness locally and what the City is doing about it. The panel will discuss what is happening regionally and locally in terms of the unhoused population. Our Regional Coordinator Kelli Barker will be there to share data and information from the county level, our Homeless Navigator Rebekah Rudabaugh will speak about her work in Golden, and the City Attorney will discuss the constitutional and legal rights and boundaries involving the people who are unsheltered. The panel will end with information about how the City is addressing houselessness and discussing some of the challenges. Learn more at:  www.GuidingGolden.com.

NOTE: City Council recently approved the City Manager’s request to create two new positions with the city. The first will be a Homeless Coordinator, who will help Golden’s homeless population find services. The second will be an Affordable Housing specialist, who will look for government grants to build more affordable housing in Golden.

Golden History Moment

Washington Avenue – click to enlarge

Yesterday, I showed off my newest old photo acquisition and explained that I was trying to date it. Based on the dates that the Gambles Store and Red & White Grocery were in business, I had it narrowed down to 1942 (when Gambles arrived) to 1955 (when Red & White left). I wished I knew more about the ages of old cars. My brilliant readers gave me several insightful hints.

The Cars
Most of the cars in the picture are pre-war, which makes sense because automobiles weren’t produced during the war. There is one slant-back car that looks post-war…possibly a 1949 Chevy Fastback or a 1948 Packard DeLuxe 8. On the other hand, it could be a Chrysler Airflow from the 1930s. Basically, the photo is too fuzzy to be entirely sure about the age of the cars.

The Overhead Wires
The overhead wire running down the middle of the street was used to power the streetcars. The route that went along Washington Avenue was discontinued in January 1949 and all trolley cars stayed east of Washington after that time. By November of that year, the wires had been removed. So the photo was taken before November of 1949.

The Arch!
I can’t believe I didn’t notice the missing “Howdy Folks” arch! The arch was constructed in March of 1949, so the photo was earlier than March of 1949.

This was a great team effort! Gambles Store arrived in 1942, so it was later than that. The arch arrived in March of 1949, so it was earlier than that. This narrows the window to 1942-March of 1949. The cars may narrow it still more, to 1948 or ’49.
