Golden History Moment

Corner of 12th and Arapahoe Streets

The Golden Greenbelt Committee was a precursor to the Parks & Recreation Board. The Committee was charged with identifying pieces of land that could be turned into parks.

The August 31, 1971 Golden Transcript reported two things of interest from the most recent Greenbelt Committee meeting. The first was that the group was suggesting that the southeast corner of 12th and Arapahoe be turned into a park. At that time, the area had not been turned into a parking lot. There was at least one old house, occupied at the time by the Golden Christian Action Guild. The area right at the corner was a small patch of bluegrass. The committee thought it might be a nice place for downtown workers to eat lunch.

Evidently, the need for a parking lot was greater than the need for a (very small) park, because soon after this time, the area was paved. (And on a happier note, the Greenbelt Committee found several better spots for parks, including the back yard of the Astor House.)

The other item of interest was the name of the retiring committee chairman: J.D. Lubahn (as in, “the Lubahn Trail”). Dr. Lubahn built that trail, which was near his home.
