Golden History Moment

The July 27, 1979 Golden Transcript reports that an adult book store at 17981 W. Colfax wanted to show adult films. The area was zoned commercial, so it was allowed to sell adult books, but it needed a special permit from City Council to show movies.

The business owner wanted to install “six small-screen coin-operated movie booths in separate areas of the store.” He said that such movies were shown in almost every other city in the metro area, and that there was great demand for such entertainment.

Several council members said they hadn’t known that the store was selling adult books. They voted 6-0 to deny the request to add the movie devices because the area was in “a high density residential area.” It was deemed to be “not in the best interests of the residents.”
