Watering Holes, Yurts, and Castle Rock

The Local Licensing Authority meets today at 2PM in City Council Chambers. The Goosetown Events Center is applying for a tavern liquor license so they can open as Goosetown Station. This is a beautifully restored house at 514 9th Street–one of the few houses left of the historic Goosetown neighborhood. Should be a great place for a tavern, with the City planning to move into the Coors office building and redevelop that area. Natural Grocers is applying for a fermented malt beverage license. Bonfire Burritos, which has been operating for several years out of a trailer in the Native Nursery parking lot, will be moving into the old frame shop/Taco John’s/Taco Mesa building at 2221 Ford Street, and they are applying for a liquor license. And finally–in case you thought there were no marijuana dispensaries in Golden–Rocky Mountain Organic Medicine is applying to renew their license. This medical marijuana business is located at 511 Orchard St. For more details, review the meeting packet….

The Library’s book group will meet at 6PM. This month’s selection was The Recipe Box by Viola Shipman.

The Utility Rate Citzen’s Committee meets at 6PM in the Public Works Building, 1445 10th St (map). This group is looking at the cost of providing our water and sewer services and evaluating whether our rate structure covers them. The agenda may appear on this page.

Parks, Recreation, & Museums Advisory Board meets at 7PM in City Council Chambers. They will discuss improvements planned for the Clear Creek RV Park bathhouse and offices. They will also improve the camp sites and add space for 4 yurts and 3 or more additional RV sites. (The RV Park is a money-maker for the City.) The price for the project came in at $859,100. The City has asked the developers to find ways to shave that down to $600K.

The minutes from last month’s meeting show a great deal of discussion about the Lubahn Trail. This trail starts at the top of 19th Street and goes up to Castle Rock. It was built many years ago by a Mines professor and is popular with locals. The trail is problematic for many reasons. First, it is located in a residential neighborhood and has no provision for parking. People using the trail tend to trespass on adjoining yards, which is unnerving to the homeowners. Second, the trail is very steep and is not built to modern standards, and neither the City of Golden nor Jeffco Open Space is anxious to take on responsibility for maintaining it–they just wouldn’t have built a trail that steep. Third, Castle Rock is private property (it still belongs to the family that ran the old Castle Rock Mountain Railway) and when people visit it, they are trespassing. The Golden Giddyup group offered to work on the trail if it would be opened for mountain bikers. See the meeting packet for more information….
