Council Recap
City Council spent 3 hours hearing public comment about and discussing the proposed tobacco & vaping ordinance last night. It’s a complicated measure and Council made several changes. As I understood the discussion, the ordinance will require that businesses selling the products be licensed, that selling to people under 21 would be illegal; and that all flavored tobacco or vaping products (including menthol cigarettes) would be banned. Underage people consuming the products could be fined, or–at the discretion of the police officer–appear in municipal court, where the judge could offer an education course in lieu of a fine. As I said, it was a complicated discussion, so I may have missed or misinterpreted some of the details. Council will have the second reading and possibly vote on it on December 12th.

The Coors Building will not be part of a proposed future municipal center. (The wrecking ball is a simulation.)

Afterwards, they discussed the costs associated with using the Coors office building as a civic center or workforce housing. The $40 million renovation estimate assumed that the history museum would move into the building, but did not incorporate the library, Miners Alley, or Foothills Art Center. Council decided that, if voters approve the funding for a new municipal center, the Coors building would be demolished.

The weather forecast says that we’ll have warm, sunny weather the next couple of days. That’s fortunate, because if you’re on the City’s trash program, Fall Yard Waste pickup is next week, on your regular trash day. Rake your leaves this weekend! See the City’s yard waste page for guidelines on how to handle branches & stuff. You must bag the yard waste in compostable bags, which are available at Meyer Hardware (1103 Arapahoe St. – map).
