Golden History Moment
The January 29, 1925 Colorado Transcript announced the grand opening of Golden’s new hotel. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Berry, had sponsored a contest to name the new venture, and the winner was “Berrimoor.”
Golden was on a modernization binge in the 1920s. They paved Washington Avenue, cleaned up the city dump and built Parfet Park in its place, and built a new high school at 10th and Washington. The Bella Vista Hotel, long considered a large, embarrassing failure, was demolished in 1920. This left the city hoping to attract a modern hotel. The Berrimoor fit the bill.
The ground floor of the Berrimoor contained two restaurants–a cafe to the right (north) and a sandwich shop/soda fountain on the left. The hotel, with its 24 guest rooms, was located on the second floor. A central room contained comfortable furniture, a fireplace, and a piano. The kitchen was a marvel of modernity, with all electric appliances. The basement included the laundry, heating plant, refrigeration plant, the switchboards, and a “potato cellar.”
The 1920s were a tough time to be starting a business, and by 1929 the hotel was in receivership. It went through a number of owners and names over the next couple of decades, but in 1948 it was purchased by Lu Holland and renamed The Holland House. That was a going concern for many years. It closed in 1987, and was reopened at the Table Mountain Inn in 1999.

1937 – The Transcript referred to it as The Wright Hotel.
1939 – A Mrs. Higbie bought the hotel from Mr. Wright and renamed it the Golden Hotel.
1943 – the Hibbards bought it from the Golden Savings & Loan and named it the LaRay Hotel.
1948 – The hotel was purchased by Lu Holland and renamed The Holland House. The Holland House closed in 1987.
1991 – The Table Mountain Inn opened. In 1999, it expanded from 32 rooms to 74.
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org. You can contribute to the cost of the digitizing project with a donation to the Golden History Museum.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
