Golden History Moment

Washington Avenue – click to enlarge

I recently acquired a new/old photo of Washington Avenue. In trying to date it, I’ve narrowed it down to the years from 1942-1955. Gambles Department Store (east side of the street) operated from 1942-1975. The Red & White Grocery was there from 1930-1955. Thus, the date was sometime between the arrival of Gambles (1942) and the departure of Red & White (1955). This would be easier if I knew anything about the dates of old cars!

Alpine Drug, which appears on the west side of the street, had a different name after 1955, so that reinforces the no-later-than-1955 conclusion. The drug store occupied the spot that now houses Del’s Tonsorial Parlor.
