My daughter, Margaret Blaha, has been giving carriage rides at Golden special events for many years. Now she’s starting a new venture: Wagon Rides Through History. In fact, it’s a mother-daughter venture! I’m going to be telling our guests about Golden history as we travel through town at Clydesdale pace.

I hope you’ll join us this Friday, July 14th. We’re offering rides at 10AM, 1PM, and 6:30PM. Tickets are available at ClearCreekCarriages.com.

CITY MEETINGS

5PM City Council Study Session @ City Hall
Principal Planner Matt Wempe will provide council with an update on transit. The Deputy City Manager will provide an update on the current status of the Strategic Plan.

6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall

Public Comments
The public is welcome to address Council at the beginning of the business meeting. Each person has 3 minutes to speak.

Council receives emailed public comments at two addresses. Emails sent to PublicComment@cityofgolden.net are posted in the meeting packet after 3PM on the day of the meeting (so you can check today’s meeting packet after 3PM on this page). These comment become part of the permanent public record.

Email sent to CouncilComments@cityofgolden.net is collected and posted every Monday at www.cityofgolden.net/media/CouncilCommentsEmails.pdf. These comments age off and disappear after a month. This week, they received eight comments asking them to use artificial turf–rather than natural grass–in the new soccer fields at Ulysses Park. They also heard from a citizen who said the city did not fly the American flag on Independence Day; another who was concerned about a thistle patch in an empty yard where a house had been scraped, and another expressing concern about the suggestion that parking requirements be dropped to one space per household.

Last month, they received nine comments objecting to the policy that prevents Golden City Brewery and Goosetown Station from having food vendors at the curb in front of their establishments.

They will read a Proclamation regarding Parks and Recreation Month

Consent Agenda
This is likely to be a very short meeting, because all items requiring a vote are on the Consent Agenda. This means that all items will be approved with a single round of voting unless one of the Councilors requests discussion about an item. The consent items include:

An Intergovernmental Agreement to work with several other local governments in forming a Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority-Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Transcript photos from the Tom Young Walk-a-Thon – enlarge

On July 6, 1990, Fireman Tom Young lost his footing while rescuing a hang glider. Both men were transported from the scene of the accident to St. Anthony’s Hospital. Tom had crushed three vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord. Tom’s family published a note in the Transcript, thanking those involved in the rescue and in his continuing care in the hospital.

We are overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of thoughts and prayers that we have received from throughout the community. Finally, from Tom and all of us in his family, we want to send our prayers and a wish for a positive recovery to [the hang glider] and his family.

The Transcript added this:

Everywhere you go, people are talking about Tom and his family. Everyone wants to help. But no one knows exactly what would be helpful. Well, now we know. Donations are what are needed. Donations will make it possible for Tom to get all the rehabilitation and equipment support he needs to get back on the job. And it could ease concerns about future money needs, such as for college for the children.
Golden Transcript
– July 12, 1990

The cast at Heritage Square are joined onstage by Tom’s brother, Frank Young, and his mother Eileen Young.

Relieved to be given a job, the community turned to fund-raising. The Foss Drug team kicked off the fund with a substantial contribution. The Kelley Trucking family matched it. Fire departments and individual firefighters from across the state sent donations. The Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department “passed the boot” at an antique fire truck event and raised $1,800 on the spot. At Oktoberfest (in late August), jeweler Tom Plummer won $10,000 in a raffle and donated $1000 of it to the Tom Young fund. Golden Rotary contributed funds. So did former President Gerald Ford.

Fund-raising events abounded. The Fire Department dedicated the proceeds of the annual Buffalo Bill Days pancake breakfast to the Tom Young Fund. They served over 2000 people and raised $11,000 for the fund. Hacky sack player Ted Martin raised $2000 by attempting to break a world record. The Golden Elks Club hosted a fund-raising spaghetti dinner. Foss Drug held a bake sale. Heritage Square Music Hall gave a benefit performance and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church served a benefit breakfast. Golden Oldies held a pig roast. Golden Jaycees hosted a pool tournament. The Elks organized a square dance. The Grizzly Rose hosted a benefit concert.

Tom’s friends from Foss Drug, the Golden Transcript, Coors, and Mayor Marv Kay organized a 10-mile walk-a-thon to raise money for the fund. The walk, with 239 participants, began in Golden and ended at St. Anthony Hospital. Tom’s 82 year-old kindergarten teacher–Verna Katona–participated. Firefighters came from all over the state to join the walk.

What was Tom Young doing during all this frenzied fund-raising? Tune in tomorrow to find out.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
