CITY MEETINGS
9-10:30AM Community Marketing Stakeholder Committee Meeting @ Fire Station #1 Conference Room
Staff and consultants will describe the fall and holiday advertising and PR campaigns. Staff will also describe plans for the upcoming Olde Golden Holidays (candlelight walk, parade, etc.).
A group of meeting planners will be in Golden Oct. 23 & 24th to see available meeting spaces, dining facilities, etc. The committee will review a first draft of the 2024 Visit Golden budget.
The Stakeholder Committee will review a survey that will be sent to merchants which will ask them to evaluate the long-running Golden Ticket program. The committee will review a first draft of the 2024 Visit Golden budget.
Staff has been working with consultants to measure the spending habits of visitors based on cell phone data. They hope to share this data with the Stakeholder Committee in November or December.
6:30PM Economic Development Commission Meeting @ City Hall
EDComm will consider a $2500 sponsorship request by EBITDA, a Golden-based company. The grant would defray the cost of a conference that will take place at the Mountaineering Center in mid-November. Approximately 100 participants are expected.
In November of 2022, EDComm agreed to support a one-year pilot project to customize business information software developed by a Golden-based company, Qwally. The software was to interface with a database provided by California-based Bluedot. Qwally charged $7500 and Bludot charged $5940. Staff is currently working to customize and refine those tools and will report on the status of the pilot.
In addition to two full-time employees, the Economic Development group has a budget of $62K. Most of this goes to Local Business Awareness Campaign Communications ($20K), Traxion ($18K), and Connects Workspace ($2500), with $7500 set aside for sponsorships. The budget tracker is included in the meeting packet.

BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD
I have a busy weekend ahead!
Tomorrow night (Friday the 13th), my daughter and I will be offering a “Ghoulish Golden” wagon ride. This is the special Halloween edition of our Golden History crawl, so expect lots of murders, lynchings, and general creepiness. Tickets available here.
On Saturday, I’ll be doing two Golden Cemetery Tours. This is a benefit for the Golden History Museum and is family-friendly. Last year I focused on Farmers and Ranchers of Golden. This year we’ll be visiting Golden Business Mavens. Get tickets here.
I hope you can join me for one or both events! Contact me if you have any questions.
GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The October 11, 1860 Western Mountaineer (the predecessor to the Transcript) reported on doings in town and in the territory. The Territorial Legislature was meeting here in Golden. “…it has been characterized by a good deal of confusion and discord.” The article, “Belligerent Delegates,” provided a brief account of a fist fight between two of the legislators–a doctor and a judge.
A lengthy article discussed “the terribly revolting murder of poor Gantz.” A separate piece provided a homily on intoxicating drink, which was considered the cause of the murder. A third article described his execution in detail, and a fourth provided the hanged man’s last words.
The paper went on to describe a “Lynching on the Plains,” “Indian Hostilities” in Wyoming, a “Shooting Affray” here in Golden, an epidemic of typhoid Fever, and the “mobbing and execution of some seven or eight men for horse stealing and other crimes” in Denver.
There is a popular phrase in the news business: “If it bleeds, it leads.” In other words–violent, lurid stories make for a popular paper. In 1860, here in the Territory, “violent and lurid” was everyday life.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
