CITY MEETINGS

5:30PM Reception for Outgoing and Incoming Councilors @ City Hall

6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall
The meeting will start with Public Comment. Any public comments received through email before 3PM will be added to the meeting packet.

Tonight’s first Consent Agenda (approved all at once without discussion) includes a raise for the Public Hearing Officer to $225/hour, a raise for the Municipal Court Judge to $48,000/year, and appointing Francine Butler to the Historic Preservation Board.

The outgoing members of Council (Casey Brown and JJ Trout) will offer comments and other members of Council will respond.

The incoming members of Council (Patty Evans and Lisa Vitry) will take their oaths of office.

The Mayor will appoint the new Mayor Pro Tem (Rob Reed).

There will be a second Public Comment period to include the new Councilors.

Second Consent Agenda
They will vote to designate the City website and the bulletin board in City Hall as the official places to post public meetings. They plan to update terminology in the City Charter, as approved by voters in the last election. They will hold a public hearing on this issue on January 23rd.

Note: they used to post public meetings in a newspaper, but dropped that process during Jason Slowinski’s term as City Manager.

Note: they used to approve the number of new housing allocations available for the year at this first meeting. That is no longer on the agenda, as our 1% growth limit was overruled by the state government.

The will read a Proclamation for National Radon Month.

The Mayor will appoint Council Members to various boards and associations.

They will review the results of a survey that asked community members whether they would like to continue having a fireworks display on the 4th of July. Alternatives included a drone show, “something else,” or doing nothing to celebrate the 4th. Of the 154 responses provided, 48.1% wanted fireworks, 22.7% wanted something else, 22.1% wanted drones, 4.5% wanted nothing, and 2.6% wanted “other.”

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The January 9, 1930 Colorado Transcript announced a $50 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a gang of chicken thieves.

Many people–both town and country–kept a flock of chickens at this time. They were a source of meat (occasionally), eggs (often), and cash.

Chicken thievery was a fairly common problem. Hobos might steal one or two chickens for immediate consumption, or concerted thieves might steal an entire flock to be sold in a different market. Such losses were a significant financial blow to a family. In 1909, two barns in adjacent yards in Golden were burned to the ground to provide a diversion for thieves, who got away with 68 chickens.

The law took chicken theft seriously, and when the thieves were caught, they often served time in either the county jail or the state penitentiary.

When the bevy of chicken thieves was arrested last spring…two of them were sentenced to a term in the penitentiary.

Chicken thieves are again operating in Jefferson county, A. Hopper on the Middle Golden road being the latest victim. Monday night nearly a hundred of his flock of blooded Plymouth Rocks were stolen, entailing a loss of about $200.

With the arrest of Henry Crutts and Frank McCouch, it is believed that an organized gang of chicken thieves which has been operating in Jefferson and other counties has been broken up….They admitted their guilt in this case and also stated that they had stolen at least two thousand dollars worth of poultry in Jefferson County in recent months.

90 Days for Chicken Thieves
Glenn A. Burd and Francis A. Brown were given 90 days in the county jail by District Judge S. A. Johnson for stealing chickens worth $21.
