Golden History Moment
The September 16, 1948 Colorado Transcript announced that Golden Bus Service would begin the following Monday. The operator, Dick Loyd, intended to have his bus on display at 13th and Washington on Saturday the 18th, and would give free rides to all comers that day.
Loyd planned to alternate between a north and a south route, both starting at 13th and Washington. Each loop would take 15 minutes. The fare would be 10 cents for adult and 5 cents for children and high school students. The bus would operate from 6:25AM until 11:30PM.
The service got off to a good start. The following week’s Transcript reported that kids were enjoying riding the bus, women were organizing sight seeing parties, and the merchants were pleased to have bus service into downtown.
Apparently, once the novelty wore off, ridership dropped. The following March, a notice appeared in the paper that the Golden Bus Service would be discontinued due to lack of community support.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
