Golden History Moment
I had the opportunity to tour the Coors Office Building at 311 10th St. yesterday. The City purchased the building and is now having it demolished, so I thought I’d get some photos before it disappears into history. Mike Gochis of Alpine Demolition was kind enough to take a small group of us around to see their progress. Mike grew up in Golden, as did his father. His brother still lives in the house where they were raised.
Many of the interior furnishings were sold or given away. There is apparently a market for used carpet tiles, and the adhesive that remains on the floor is industrial-grade sticky: my companions and I were in constant danger of losing our shoes. Ceiling tiles have a ready market: they will go back to a company that makes ceiling tiles and be recycled into more ceiling tiles. The exterior windows have all been removed, so the excellent views from the building are even more accessible now.
One item that isn’t finding a ready market is cubical walls. Most offices are closed right now, because of the pandemic, and companies aren’t ready to commit to creating new cubical-filled spaces.
The building will not be imploded. Alpine will be bringing in big cranes that will rip off pieces of the building. The concrete will be ground up into a substance that is commonly used for roadbeds. Some of it will probably cross the creek and become part of the new construction on the brewery grounds. The building will be gone by August.
The next use of the property hasn’t been defined, but the city hopes to build a new city hall and cultural center.
