Today is the LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR. We’ll have 14 hours, 59 minutes and 14 seconds of daylight. The actual magic moment of the summer solstice happens tomorrow morning at 4:07AM. Tomorrow will be less than one second shorter than today. In contrast, at the winter solstice, December 21st, we had 9 hours, 21 minutes and 16 seconds of daylight. The Planning Commission will have a study session tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. They will be discussing the Capital Improvement Plan–particularly for 2019 and more generally for the next 10 years. They will consider the results of the Investment Advisory Task Force‘s report, which showed that, based on a sample of 340 respondents, the only “investment” with strong support is acquisition of more Open Space.

The Golden Community Rodeo will start at 5PM at the Clear Creek Kayak Park. This is a grass roots effort that brings together whitewater enthusiasts, local residents and businesses, and industry representatives to participate in this community event. Learn more….  The third and final night of their year’s Rodeo will be next Wednesday, the 27th.

I received an interesting note yesterday from one of my readers:

In keeping with your “Don’t Let Change Sneak Up on You” theme, I wanted to remind folks, especially those who live in the Southridge neighborhood, that feedback to JeffCo Open Space re: the South Table Mountain Master Plan is due soon. Please submit comments to STM@jeffco.us by 6/29.

Here’s a link to the 2-page fact sheet
And here’s a link to the Master Plan

I attended the community meeting on June 6th and have also read the Master Plan. I’d encourage people to read it and draw their own conclusions, but folks should be aware that the plan is to pave over a meadow in the mesa to build a lot for 80-100 vehicles on Quaker St. north of Golden Hills Road, just past the NREL West Gate.

For context: the West Lot off of Hwy 93 at North Table Mountain accommodates 74 vehicles. So, we’re talking about more parking spaces for a park that is half the acreage. Also on the table is the possibility that the JCOS would eventually extend a paved road from this lot down to Golden Hills Road, where there’s currently a small informal lot for about 8 cars.

Obviously, it’s important for all county residents to be able to access our parks. But readers may want to share w/ Jeffco Open Space if they have ideas about how to balance access and development with traffic and overall preservation of the space.

Please weigh in if you have opinions on this issue:  STM@jeffco.us.
