Golden History Moment

44 Years Ago
Beginning in 1976, the Transcript featured a column called The Job Hopper. The reporter, Daniel Halligan, was making a career of working a week at a time in many different jobs and then writing about the experience. He had been working in Denver, but decided to try a few jobs in Golden, so he moved into the Golden Motel and looked around for opportunities.

The April 8, 1977 Golden Transcript described Halligan’s week working at Steve’s Corner–the Western Wear store at 13th and Washington (now a Starbuck’s). At that time, the upstairs area was devoted to army surplus merchandise. The reporter, an ex-WWII paratrooper, enjoyed the campaign hats, foxhole shovels, army cots, and surplus military garb.

Steve’s Corner was owned by Steve Heinhoff, who was only 27 at that time. Halligan admitted he was a less than stellar employee, who spent too much time messing around in the army surplus department. On his last day, he told Steve that he was sorry to be leaving, because he’d enjoyed the week. “Sure is too bad,” Steve replied…but he was grinning as he said it, and kept grinning all that way back to his office.

Halligan went on to work as a department store Santa, an exterminator, a trash collector, a mortuary assistant, a milkman, and a few hundred other professions. Job Hopper was such a successful column that it was syndicated in 200 newspapers. The columns were republished in books and Heinhoff also launched a radio career, describing his jobs in two-minute segments.
