Schedule of events for the 1971 Buffalo Bill Days – click to enlarge

On July 28, 1971, Golden was getting ready for Buffalo Bill Days. The annual celebration was more tied in with the Buffalo Bill museum at that time. Saturday morning began with a trail ride up the mountain, to the museum, where they would hold graveside services. The parade was held in the afternoon.

In other local news, the Golden Marlins, our youth swim team, were holding morning practices at the old outdoor swimming pool at 10th and Illinois. Then, as now, they did a lot of shivering.

The Big M Lounge was operating at 1305 Washington Avenue at that time, in the spot now occupied by Woody’s Pizza.

Pizza Hut’s first Golden home – click to enlarge

Pizza Hut was fairly new to Golden, having opened in February of 1970. They were in their original location, 2501 Ford Street. That building is now occupied by Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant, but it’s easy to recognize the distinctive style of an old-fashioned Pizza Hut.

The Transcript was also covering national news in 1971, and included articles reminding young men that they had to register for the draft, and another reporting on 13 battlefield deaths and 88 GIs wounded in “Indochina.”

Apollo 15 was orbiting the moon, with plans for astronauts Scott and Irwin to land on the moon on the morning of July 30th. They planned to spend 67 hours there, traveling around in their moon buggy.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for funding the online collection of historic newspapers.
