The previous article regarding City of Golden finances identified Taxes as the source of more than 75% of our General Fund revenues with 2025 tax income projected to be well over $33 million.
Sales Tax revenues are projected to be over $17 million, more than half of the Taxes category. The total Sales Tax in Golden is 7.5%, made up of three parts:
- City of Golden, 3%
- Jefferson County: 0.5%
- State of Colorado: 4%
For items sold within the City limits, the 7.5% sales tax is collected by the vendor. The City’s 3% portion is remitted to the City.Section 3.03.30 of the City’s Tax Code contains a long list of transactions that should be taxed. A shorter list can be found on the Taxes and Fees page of the City website. The lists include many things you would expect, such as all food, gas and electric for residential and most commercial uses, hotels, cable TV. It also includes some surprising things, such as items dispensed from vending machines and “prosthetic devices for animals.” Both sites also contain lists of items that are exempt from sales tax.
