PARKS RECREATION AND MUSEUM ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
7PM Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall
PRAM will hear from a citizens group that hopes to establish a World War II memorial in Golden. They have reviewed several possible locations and want to propose one to this board: the north end of the parking lot next to History Park (map). The area is currently rather unkempt and could be enhanced if given a purpose.
The Golden History Museum will be there to discuss de-accessioning a pair of artifacts. Through a mix-up, personnel changes, and the passage of time, the Museum wound up in possession of a log fragment and wooden peg that came from the Pullman cabin. They were originally rescued by and belong to the Golden Landmarks Association, so the Museum proposes returning them to GLA.
Staff will update the board on the ongoing Ulysses Park and (future) Bachman Park projects.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The June 15, 1961 Colorado Transcript featured a full-page ad from Hested’s “5 and 10” store. The prices were great, but I found the most interesting part to be the photo of the store at the top of the page. The store only looked like that for about 5 years.
Hested’s was built in 1957, on the lot that had formerly held the terminus for the interurban line to Denver. In 1962, the owner bought the old Linder block next door and expanded the store dramatically. Thereafter, it was called “Hested’s Department Store.”
The Hested’s building was demolished in 2005 and replaced by Gateway Station.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
