Golden History Moment

1949 City Boundary at 24th Street

The March 27, 1958 Colorado Transcript included an article titled: “Re-Zoning Of Triangle Plot Is Discussed – Planning Commission To Ask Denial Of Request.” At that time, 24th Street was the southern border of the City, so the “triangle” in question was outside the City limits.

The County Commissioners had been asked to rezone the triangular plot of property (between South Golden Road and East Street) from Agricultural to Commercial. Out of courtesy, the Commissioners sent the case to Golden to get local reactions.

The Bunzel addition was filling up at that time, and many residents attended the Planning Commission meeting to object to the change. The neighborhood thought the land should be used as a park or recreation area. Some suggested a swimming pool. In 1958, the only playground equipment in town was on the Mitchell Elementary playground, a mile away.

The Planning Commission asked the Commissioners to deny the rezoning. Clearly, commercial zoning won, because in later years, that tract included a bowling alley (now a Natural Grocer), a strip mall, Pizza Hut, a Texaco station, a coffee shop, a paint store, a credit union, and other businesses. The southernmost tip of the triangle remained undeveloped.

About 5 years ago, the City removed the irrigation system and replaced the lawn in that section with “natural grasses.” Nearby businesses and residents considered them to be unsightly weeds and asked the City to do something better with the property. Once again, the possibility of a park was discussed, because it was still more than a mile to the nearest playground. In the end, the lawn returned and picnic tables were added.
