Golden History Moment

During the late 1940s and 1950s, World War II veterans used the GI Bill to attend college at the Colorado School of Mines. Many stayed in Golden after college. Hundreds of Golden’s houses were built during that era.

The April 28, 1955 Colorado Transcript reported that building permits had been issued for six houses on Goldco Circle (map). The homes at 356, 352, and 348 Goldco Circle were estimated to cost $6420 upon completion, and the ones at 344, 340, and 336 were expected to cost $7900. (According to Zillow, those houses now have estimated values ranging from $615-$986K.)

The apartment building at 1221 Illinois Street (map) also got a building permit that week. It was expected to cost $50,000.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org
