The December 28, 1922 Colorado Transcript described Golden Fire Department’s first illuminated fire run. The spectacle was staged to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the Colorado State Firemen’s Association. Similar events were being held in many other towns in Colorado.
Designed to provide both a holiday show and a demonstration of the department’s skill, the town’s fire truck was decorated with tinsel and red, white, and blue electric lights. To increase the drama, the street lights and store lights were turned off for a few minutes.
A big bonfire was lit at Washington and 9th Street. The fire truck started at 14th Street and raced down the Avenue to the bonfire. Once there, the firefighters connected to the hydrant on 9th Street, “laid several hundred feet of hose, broke couplings and made nozzle connection. It was only a matter of 2-1/2 minutes from the time the truck left 14th Street until the water was coming through the nozzle at 9th.”
As always, it was Safety First for the Fire Department. Prior to the run down Washington Avenue, the fire fighters pushed all parked cars onto the side streets. “Several owners of machines were surprised on coming out of the stores where they were shopping that their machines were not where they had left them.”
After the demonstration, the truck and crew returned to the Central Station. There, they held an open house for members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. The assemblage consumed more than 500 donuts and 25 gallons of coffee.
