Tree Sale, Public Art, Art Show and Sale, City Council

The Trees Have Arrived!
I hope you haven’t purchased a Christmas tree yet, because the Optimist Club’s annual shipment has arrived. Their temporary tree lot is set up in the US Bank parking lot, at 19th and Jackson (map). The trees are nice and fresh! Prices range from $45-70, and all proceeds go to support the Optimists programs for local youth, including their bicycle recycle program. They also sell fresh wreaths–$25 for plain ones and $30 for wreaths decorated by the local Girl Scout troop. They will be open every weekday from noon to 6 and weekends 9 to noon until the trees run out.

Public Art Commission
9AM
The Public Art Commission will meet this morning in City Council Chambers. They will discuss their plan to move “Run and Fly” from its current location near Highway 93 at the north end of town to the triangle of land at South Golden Road and Grand Court (map). The Commission aspires to have a major art installation at each of the main “gateways” into Golden, but the approach from the north has proven difficult. Traffic goes past that spot at high speeds, and neither Run and Fly nor its predecessor, Checkmate, have been big enough to attract attention in that location. Checkmate was moved to the overpass at 19th and Hwy 6, and now Run and Fly will move to South Golden Road. They will also discuss their plans to add artwork to the signal boxes around town, to paint murals citywide, and to move “Golden Touch” (the statue of the miner with his burro) to 14th and Washington, near the Table Mountain Inn. See the meeting packet for more information….

Open Studio Group Art Show & Sale
2-7PM
The Open Studio Group is hosting an Art Show & Sale in their creative space upstairs. There will be art demonstrations and kids activities. Those who stop by will be the first to see their new darkroom! And of course, while you’re at Foothills you can check out the Holiday Art Market, which is open from 10AM-5PM.

City Council
6:30PM
City Council meets tonight in Council Chambers. The consent agenda includes approval of a contract to refurbish the City RV Park at the cost of $806,415. The Public Works department will receive an award for the North Washington Complete Street Project. They will hold a public hearing on the proposed new water and sewer rates and another hearing for changes to drainage rates. They will change the fire code to allow churches to be used for temporary shelter during severe weather. They will amend the 2019 budget to cover the recent purchase of additional water rights, a new part-time salary for the museum, increased insurance costs, increased street improvements, and $13 million to pay for the purchase of the MillerCoors property. They will vote on, and are expected to approve, the 2020 budget of $82,216,422. See the meeting packet for more information about any of tonight’s topics.
