GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The August 4, 1988 Golden Transcript reminded us: “Golden Rotary sells fresh Colo. peaches.” The Rotary Club had a new idea for fund-raising that year.
Coors had trucks that delivered beer to the west slope but came back to Golden empty. Noland Farms in Palisade had first-rate, fresh-picked peaches that needed to be transported from the orchards to the legions of peach-lovers on the front range. Coors agreed to pick up a load of peaches and deliver them to the Golden Rotary Club. And so, a fund-raiser was born.
Golden Rotarians delivered order forms to their friends and neighbors. People loved the idea, and many ordered a dozen or more boxes–some for freezing, some for canning, some for giving as gifts to neighbors and clients.
That first year, the peach orders were distributed in the parking lot of the Village Shopping Center (Kinkos, Taco Bell, Ace Hardware, etc.). The line was long, but no one seemed to mind, as people chatted, comparing peach recipes and canning methods.
Thirty-five years later, the Rotary Club of Golden is still running their west slope peach fund-raiser, and it’s more popular than ever. Their logistics have improved, as pick-up has moved to the Jeffco Fairgrounds (map) and is now blindingly fast.
The peaches are still freshly picked and tree-ripened. Join in the Golden tradition! Order your peaches from any Golden Rotarian or do it through their website. The peaches will arrive on September 2nd.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
