presented by local historian Lauren Giebler.
Enjoy an evening of Colorado history! This month’s topic is one that seems appropriate in the lead-up to Halloween: Train Robberies in the Rocky Mountain West! Join local historian Lauren Giebler as she explores and illustrates this engaging and sometimes gruesome topic. There will also be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Train robberies were an American phenomenon, especially in the West where rails outdistanced the ability to defend them, and desolate miles of track were made to order for banditry. Join historian Lauren Giebler as she regales us with tales of train robberies throughout Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Learn how bandits knew which train to rob, how they got the train to stop, and how they made their escape. From the explosive efforts of the Wild Bunch Gang to the gruesome demise of George Parrott, learn more about the men who hijacked trains in search of fame and fortune—and some of the things that went wrong along the way.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

The 1878 Jefferson County Courthouse with jail cells in the basement – enlarge

The October 6, 1910 Colorado Transcript reported a “Mysterious Escape from County Jail.” Frank Foster, accused of horse theft, escaped from the jail in the basement of the courthouse. The article stated that the prisoner must have had outside help from his gang members.

The previous year, the courthouse had replaced the coal-burning stoves located in individual offices with a steam heat system. The boiler was located in the basement, near the jail, and the noise from the boiler probably covered noise made by opening the locks.

The article stated that Foster was “an old time jail bird, and twelve or thirteen years ago escaped from the same jail under similar circumstances.” Sheriff A. W. Heater was offering a $50 reward for Foster’s capture.

The January 12, 1911 Transcript reported that Foster had been recaptured. The article may have been implying that Foster’s escape had cost Sheriff Heater the election: “As his last official act as county sheriff, A. W. Heater yesterday landed behind the bars Frank Foster, the alleged horse thief who mysteriously escaped from the county jail here just before election.” In January, Foster was spotted in Pueblo. Heater traveled there to retrieve him, “brought him to Golden and turned him over to Sheriff Dennis.”

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
