GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
George West founded the Golden Transcript and ran it for forty years, till his death in 1906. An inveterate booster, he never ran out of ideas for new businesses or civic improvements to improve Golden. In four decades, he proposed hundreds of them.
The July 27, 1905 Colorado Transcript included an article, probably written by George West, titled “Famous Indian Battle Ground Site for Amusement Garden.”
Editor West was making a case for someone to build an amusement park at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon. He envisioned “a pleasure garden, with a dancing pavilion of generous size, and other accessories along these lines….” He pointed out that Welch ditch could provide irrigation water for the gardens, and our new Beaver Brook water source would provide pure drinking water.
The amusement park never happened, but I was interested in his description of the Indian battle. He claimed that there were remnants of an old Indian fort near the mouth of the canyon, and gave the late Chief Colorow as his source regarding the battle.
…it was away back in the ’40’s, or some twenty years before the advent of the white men, that a most sanguinary battle was fought here between his tribe of Utes and a large party of Arapahoes and Cheyennes. Many were killed on both sides, resulting in a drawn battle, and from that time forward until the white settlers filled the valley the locality was sedulously avoided by both the mountain and plains Indians.
As practically the same story was told us by the old trappers and mountaineers with whom we came in contact here in the early days, we are compelled to believe the legend as vouched for by old Colorow.
