Town & Gown, Powder Bash, and an Attempted Burglary

Monthly Appeal

March is drawing to a close. Considering that winter didn’t really start until the December 31st snowstorm, I’m surprisingly anxious for spring.

This past month I’ve covered Prohibition, Depression, the Dust Bowl, the birth and death of businesses, construction and demolition of buildings, tourism, industries, burglaries, crime and punishment, sewers, and roadways…oh yes, and the CoorsTek rezoning, Heart of Golden, retail marijuana, retention of public records, and the City’s hiring plans.

Many thanks to the people who sponsored this email for the month of March! If you enjoy the Eye Candy, the events, the descriptions of upcoming city meetings, and the Golden History, please consider sponsoring us for April–or contributing a small amount on a monthly basis. Thanks,

Golden History Moment

The March 30, 1881 Colorado Transcript included a column of business news.

The Cambria Fire Brick works were planning to add on to their facility. The new space would allow them to make 10,000 bricks per day. They would be adding two new kilns and an additional smokestack.

Burglars had attempted to rob the Golden Mill the previous Sunday morning. Nearby residents had heard two explosions and afterwards saw “three suspicious looking characters” hurrying across the Ford street bridge.

Later that morning, the proprietor’s son discovered their Mosler, Bahmann & Co. safe partially blown. After using gunpowder, the burglars had used a sledgehammer, but they were unable to breach the safe.

It was later discovered that the sledgehammer had been stolen from the nearby blacksmith shop, where the owner found his door broken.

The business news ended with this perky announcement:
