Denver Ordnance Plant/Remington Small Arms Plant – Denver Public Library Western History Collection – enlarge - Click to enlarge

After more than a decade of economic Depression, Golden’s citizens were very interested in the new Remington small arms plant, located just 10 minutes from Golden. It was expected to provide thousands of well-paid jobs.

The October 23, 1941 Colorado Transcript announced that the new plant would be open for tours on the coming Saturday. It was, of course, a highly secure facility. Visitors would be required to arrive in cars and stay in them.

Cars will not be permitted to stop within the reservation nor can their occupants alight, but a tour of the grounds may be made and all of the 150 buildings can be seen along the route…. The general public will not be allowed inside any of the production buildings, but will be given a comprehensive view of the exterior of the many buildings making up the vast plant. The tour inside the grounds will be three miles in length.

After World War II, the plant was repurposed to serve as the Denver Federal Center. Many Golden residents still work there!

Many thanks to an anonymous donor for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of October.
