Real World Golden

Today is the holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Dr. King’s birthday was actually January 15th (1929), but the Uniform Federal Holiday Act of 1968 moved most federal holidays to Monday.

Government offices will be closed, as will the library, and there will be no mail delivery today.

Holiday Lights
You’re probably aware of the tradition of keeping up holiday lights until the end of Stock Show.

Since there was no Stock Show, I wondered what the city would do this year about the downtown lights. They come out of two different budgets, with the Downtown Development Authority financing the ones in the business district while the City covers the ones along the Creek and in the parks. Generally, the City starts removing theirs after Stock Show, while the DDA keeps theirs up through Valentine’s Day to attract diners to the restaurants.

I asked Megan Pinson, the City’s Community Marketing Coordinator, how the lights would work this year. Here’s her reply:

Near the end of January, Parks will take down lights:
In the trees along Clear Creek
Billy Drew Bridge
History Park
Parfet Park
Municipal Buildings
S. Golden Rd.

The DDA lights will stay up through Valentine’s Day:
Washington Ave. and side streets
Multi-colored lights on the fence along the north side of Clear Creek
Visitors Center
Signature tree at the VC

Omnibus stopping at the Alvord House (which stood at 13th and Arapahoe, where the Armory now stands) – click to enlarge

An omnibus was an early form of public transportation–a horse-drawn vehicle with a door in the back and benches along the sides. Golden’s omnibus picked up passengers from the railroad depot and carried them to the business district along Washington Avenue.

The January 18, 1882 Colorado Transcript reported the following:
Dr. Jos. Anderson had a narrow escape from a serious accident Tuesday morning. He was seated in the back part of the omnibus as it turned the corner of Second street and the avenue and was leaning against the door to say “good morning” to a friend, when the wagon passed over the crossing, throwing him violently out of the door. He struck upon his side and forehead, sustaining several painful bruises, from which nothing serious is apprehended. In the language of Deputy Sheriff Todd, who ran to his assistance, “he looked as bewildered as a ‘possum treed in a holler log.”

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
