The December 15, 1949 edition of the Colorado Transcript described plans for a new $1.25 million building on the Mines campus: Chauvenet Hall. The front page also announced the death of Mrs. George M. Kimball. She was the daughter of George and Eliza West, Golden pioneers and founders of the Golden Transcript. The American Legion raised $660,000 to fight polio. (That’s of historical interest because polio has since been eradicated in the United States, and most of the rest of the world.)

The Welcome Arch was new that year, and the Chamber of Commerce had 250,000 postcards showing the arch printed. The Post Master announced that the Golden Post Office would be open until 9PM every evening until December 23rd, for the convenience of patrons shipping parcels.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for putting the historic Transcripts online, and thanks to the Golden Transcript for documenting life in Golden since 1866!
