Golden History Moment

Circa 1907 and circa 2020 – (top) Golden History Museum Collection (bottom) Google Earth – enlarge

The top map comes from a 1907 brochure that advertised the “Wishbone Route.” This was a three hour trolley tour that went from Denver to Leyden, then to Golden. The lower map is a similar view today, taken from Google Earth.

The older map shows the area between Denver and Golden as solidly agricultural. The lower map is solid suburbia. Most of that growth occurred after World War II.

Arvada’s population was 1,482 in 1940. Now it’s approximately 123,000.

Golden’s population was 3,175 in 1940. Now it’s approximately 20,000.

Wheat Ridge and Lakewood were both incorporated semi-rural/semi-suburban areas until they both incorporated in 1969.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
