We’ve been waiting 50 years for this! At the end of World War I (1918), the people of Golden buried a time capsule full of Golden memorabilia and the names of the boys who had served in The Great War. Their instructions were that the time capsule be dug up in 50 years, on November 11, 1968. That was duly done, and a new capsule was buried in 1968, to be opened on November 11, 2018. The day has come! Be at the History Museum this morning at 11AM to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and to open the 1968 time capsule.
The Armistice between Germany and the Allied Forces was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
The 1918 crew at the Transcript wrote a great article describing the spontaneous celebration that took place in downtown Golden when word of the Armistice reached us. There were firecrackers, a bonfire, and a spur of the moment parade that stretched for six blocks. The crowd rang the City’s fire bell non-stop for more than seven hours, until it finally cracked. That cracked bell still hangs in front of City Hall. Read the original Transcript article here: goldentoday.com/golden-goes-wild-when-glorious-news-of-victory-is-received.
