Golden History Moment
The June 6, 1968 Colorado Transcript announced that the “Long Awaited CSM Grad Center” would soon be built. The major donor was the Green Foundation, named after one of the founders of Texas Instruments.
The article detailed Mines President Orlo Childs’ “one-man funding campaign,” in which he traveled the country soliciting pledges from alumni and industries. Many education foundations told him that they did not contribute to tax-supported schools. AMAX Foundation made one of the earliest large contributions, pledging $300K in honor of the late Arthur Bunker, president of Climax Molybdenum from 1949-1957. The Kresge Foundation (department stores), Standard Oil of Indiana Foundation, alumni George R. Brown (class of ’22) and William Friedhoff (class of ’07) also made substantial contributions.
Several of those donors were honored in the new building: the Green Center, Friedhoff Hall, and Bunker Auditorium. George R. Brown made a later, larger donation, and Brown Hall is named after him.
The 1600 seat auditorium was expected to be a cultural asset to the community and was seen as a complement to Golden’s new art museum (now Foothills Art Center), located in the former Presbyterian Church building at 15th and Washington.
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
