Follow-up on Yesterday’s City Council Items:
Last night, City Council voted not to put the sale of the Astor House on this fall’s ballot.
Councilors Brown, Dale, Reed, and Haseman and Mayor Sloan voted to postpone a vote until at least 2020. Councilor Weinberg wanted to proceed with the vote this fall. Citizens asked Council for more opportunity to generate ideas as to how the property could be used, so now the City has time to solicit ideas from the public.

Council also voted unanimously to proceed with the purchase of the Coors building and property. The conversation was a bit muddled but I think they were saying that the building may not be usable, and they may need to tear it down and build a new one, but they want the property enough to buy it anyway. I also think they said that the $24.5 million they had planned to spend wouldn’t be enough to cover new construction. Councilor Weinberg mentioned asking citizens to vote for more funding.

So Golden will have a new municipal center, a transit hub, new cultural facilities, workforce housing in Goosetown, and quite a lot of debt.

Councilor Brown asked the City Manager whether the Coors property purchase affected funding for the Front Porch. Mr. Slowinski replied no, that they are separate budgets. Staffing is part of the Operating Budget, while the Coors purchase will be made with Capital Improvement Funds. Capital Funds pay for streets, sidewalks, parks, trails, city facilities maintenance, public art, solar projects, open space purchases, firetrucks, water and sewer infrastructure, etc. See the 2018 Capital Improvement Plan.
